FUNDarte presents Ego by Ulises Gonzalez The work
of acclaimed artist Ulises Gonzales will show during two of
the largest arts events in Miami where his new series promises to make
a big impact.
Ulises González Gutiérrez was born in Havana in 1963 and resides in Guadalajara City since 1991. He has had 18 individual exhibitions between 1987 and 2004, mostly throughout Mexico and in Cuba before emigrating.
The exhibit and series entitled Ego (that will show during Art Basel and Art Miami) is a comic depiction of a superhero-type character, who’s larger than life-size image is amplified on the canvas.
The protagonist’s story unfolds through a series of images where he begins to undress while a flower he places in his mouth begins to loose its petals and fall to his feet, the last image of the series. There amongst the petals on the floor are the words “me quiere" (she/he loves me).
The character is never seen fully nude, but his self-doubt and humanity are fully exposed.
The series is sketched in charcoal on canvas with certain details highlighted with oils. The pieces are impressive at approximately 100” x 60”.
This exhibit is part of a FUNDarte project called reMEMBERING Cuba that brings Cuban artists from other places along with their diverse perspectives to South Florida. Sponsors Event Sponsors: Centro Cultural De Mexico, Miami
